DAR ES SALAAM Mayor, Isaya Mwita, has appealed to the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) to prosecute people misusing social media by posting false and inflammatory statements.
He made the plea following a recent false statement circulated in the social media claiming that he was opposing Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda’s directive on house-tohouse inspection to establish economic activities done by each city resident.
He said a statement circulating in social networks which says that Makonda’s order is unacceptable, “was not issued by the Mayor’s Office and aims to mislead the public about the mayor’s responsibilities.”
“The statement has tarnished my name and created unnecessary misunderstanding between me and the government,” Mwita told reports. “I am not here to create conflicts. My duty is to cooperate with the city residents and other government officials to facilitate development of the city,” he explained.
He said statement issued on July 15, this year, through the social media has disturbed his family and the public in general.
Mwita promised to report the matter to the police to ensure those involvement in the dissemination of said malicious statement on social networks are arrested.
“When this information spread, I was with the new City Director, Siporah Liana, discussing on how to implement various issues and we did not talk anything about Makonda’s directive,” he said.
