The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
GHFP-II’s goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency’s immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.
Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency’s ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.
BACKGROUND:
The Policy, Evaluation and Communication Division (PEC) of the Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH) in the Bureau for Global Health, creates an enabling environment for sexual and reproductive health (RH) initiatives. PEC works with partners within USAID and externally to: promote effective sexual and RH advocacy, policy, financing, and governance (Policy); collect, analyze, and evaluate data for evidence-based decision making (Evaluation); and develop and implement communication efforts to influence attitudes, norms, and behaviors of beneficiaries and providers (Communication). PRH provides technical leadership, strategic direction, and implementation oversight, support to field missions, partner coordination, and performance tracking for the family planning (FP) component of the US Government’s Global Health Initiative.
INTRODUCTION:
The FP Communications Intern (Intern) will provide assistance to PRH/PEC staff to revise, update and create additional content and resources for the FP Training Resources Package (TRP), which is available online at https://www.fptraining.org/. This set of materials was developed by PRH in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). It includes curriculum components and tools for trainers to design, implement, and evaluate FP/RH training.
The Intern will work closely with the Knowledge Management/IT Adviser as his/her onsite manager.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Gaining a greater understanding of how USAID/PRH collaborates with key partners and stakeholders.
- Become familiar with a key collection of training materials based on WHO guidance.
- Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducting interviews guided by a set of predetermined questions, with the ability to explore new, relevant ideas that are brought up during the interview, and publish these through blog posts on the TRP website.
- Assisting PRH staff in PEC and Service Delivery Improvement divisions to modify, update and add content to the TRP website, including:
- Updates to TRP modules based on revised WHO guidance (Medical Eligibility Criteria and Selected Practice Recommendations)
- Updates to French content based on corresponding updates to English content
- Participating in making revisions to two new modules (female and male sterilization) based on technical reviews by USAID, WHO and UNFPA.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of a promotion plan for the TRP overall, as well as individual modules.
- Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern’s own interests.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled master’s or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate in a program related to public health, public policy, public administration, international development, or other related fields; or, completion of such within the past 12 months.
- Demonstrated interest and/or work experience in global health and/or international development. Familiarity with FP/RH and training is preferred.
- Ability to perform research on health related projects and programs, largely related to family planning, and rapidly analyze, organize and summarize key information.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with FP online resources and tools or similar platforms a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Basic reading in French preferred.
- US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
COMPENSATION:
$1,690 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position).
